NEC X is excited to invite Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs) to drive forward our mission of disrupting and transforming industries with us.
The objective of the EIR role is to analyze and identify one project from NEC Labs that the EIR wishes to use as the base of a new startup. The EIR will be required to identify the market, product fit, MVP and V1, and fundraising goals. This role will heavily rely on an EIR’s existing network within markets and the VC community. After a set amount of time (6 months – 1 year), the EIR will be required to either have the startup receive outside funding or be spun into NEC’s core businesses.

Behavioral Analytics with Real-Time Action Recognition
This technology understands video data by learning object interactions using novel computer vision and deep learning methods to model human actions. It provides fine-grained predictions of human actions for over 400 types of classes and works in both indoor and outdoor environments, and even detects behavior and object interactions within crowds.
Natural Language Understanding and Review Recommendation
Accepting a natural language demand via text or voice as inputs, this technology recommends customer-specific best services or products, based on the open-source information reported in reviews.
Wireless Tagging for Merchandises
This technology is utilized in the end-to-end physical analytics solution by tagging the retail products with these technology-based tags. These tags are designed to satisfy precisely the needs of low-cost, battery-free, attachable to everyday products, and readable by commodity devices.
Multi-Modal Analytics for Time Series and Text Comments
It provides readable explanations to time series queries by searching historical time series using natural language description and extracting structured domain knowledge, including time series motifs and text keywords, as well as their relations in the form of quantitative models and descriptive rules.
Cyber-Physical Integrated Analysis
This technology assists users in identifying target persons and estimating their locations by gathering scattered information across the cyberspace and analyzing their social network profile and locations based on geographical proximity.
Based on speech analysis technology, it provides a different option for personal identification when any conventional biometrics (e.g., face, fingerprint, iris, etc.) are unavailable or invisible, typically on the telephone.
In this role, the EIR will take the lead in customer discovery and validation to uncover a business opportunity that will attract sophisticated angel investors and later venture capital investment (e.g., potential for high growth and a large opportunity).
